Today, I want to talk about something close to my heart: the power of self-expression through dance. Choosing to express yourself through dance can be one of the most liberating and fulfilling experiences. But it also comes with its own set of challenges, especially the vulnerability that comes with putting your true self out there. Let’s explore this journey together.
Dance as a Form of Expression
Dance is a powerful medium for expressing emotions, stories, and personal experiences. It allows us to communicate in a way that words often can't. When you step onto the pole, you're not just performing tricks; you're telling a story, sharing a piece of yourself with the world. This form of expression is beautiful, but it also requires a certain level of vulnerability.
Embracing Vulnerability
Putting your emotions and creativity on display can be daunting. It opens you up to judgment and criticism. However, it's also what makes dance so impactful. When you're willing to be vulnerable, you create a deeper connection with your audience. They see your authenticity, and that honesty can be incredibly powerful.
Raygun's performance at the Olympics
A great example of embracing vulnerability and creativity is Rachael 'Raygun' Gunn, an Australian break-dancer who took the world by storm with her performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Dressed head to toe in Australia's green and gold tracksuit, Raygun's performance included hopping like a kangaroo and writhing like a snake. It was unconventional, and it sparked both memes and criticism. Despite not scoring any points from the judges and losing all three of her bouts, Raygun's performance went viral, drawing significant attention.
Raygun responded to the criticism by explaining her intent to bring a unique style of dance to the competition. "What I wanted to do was come out here and do something new and different and creative — that’s my strength, my creativity,” she said. “I was never going to beat these girls on what they do best, the dynamic and the power moves, so I wanted to move differently, be artistic and creative because how many chances do you get that in a lifetime to do that on an international stage?”
Raygun is a lecturer at Macquarie University in the department of media, communications, creative arts, literature, and language. She has published numerous papers on the culture of hip hop and street dance while maintaining a career as a professional break-dancer.
Her approach shows that even if your style is unconventional and might lead to mockery, what matters most is the authenticity and passion behind it. Creative dance can draw attention to your art, and if it achieves the objective of expression, does the criticism really matter?
A Contentious Issue
Raygun's participation in the Olympics was contentious. Many people felt she should not have been allowed to take the place of "better" dancers to represent her country. Should Raygun have been allowed to perform at the Olympics—a forum to express her creativity at the cost of younger, more agile dancers? How do you define the win? In scores and medals or in attention and infamy? This situation presents a very interesting social experiment in defining art in competitions.
There is now debate amongst so many industry dancers, regarding her Olympic selection, whether it was legitimate, and how it contributed to breaking now being removed from the 2028 games. Yet, the bigger picture: breaking is now back (globally) capturing headlines and the topic of every social forum.
Raygun's objective of attracting attention for the industry, through creative expression - accomplished. However, she has opened herself up for ridicule and scorn in the process.
