Pole Essentials and Tips for Beginners

Are you ready to start your pole dancing journey? Whether you're drawn to the artistry, athleticism, or empowerment it offers, starting as a beginner can be exciting and intimidating. But don't worry! We have all the tips and tricks to help you confidently navigate your first classes.

What you Need to bring to Class:

Water Bottle:

Like with any exercise staying hydrated is crucial. Pole dancing is a physically demanding sport that can cause you to sweat and lose fluids. Staying hydrated is important for maintaining energy levels, preventing dehydration, and optimising your performance during class.

Adequate hydration supports proper muscle function and aids in muscle recovery. Drinking water before, during, and after your pole class can help minimise muscle cramps, soreness, and fatigue, allowing you to perform at your best and recover more effectively afterwards.

Pole Grip:

Too much sweating on your hands can cause easy slips on the pole. Keeping your hands dry and tacky is crucial for beginners who are still developing strength and technique to avoid unnecessary slips.

Pole grips work by improving grip, enhancing stability, and reducing slipping between the dancer's skin and the pole surface. Whether in the form of tacky solutions, moisture-absorbing compounds, or specialised adhesives, pole grips provide dancers with the confidence and control they need to perform their best on the pole.

Hand or Sweat Towel:

Excess sweat on your skin can compromise your grip on the pole, making it more difficult to perform moves and poses with confidence and control. A towel allows you to wipe away quickly and conveniently sweat from your face, neck, and body, helping you stay comfortable, dry, and focused throughout your class.

Also sharing poles with other dancers in a class means that the pole surface may accumulate sweat, oils, and residues over time. Using a towel to wipe down the pole before and after your turn helps maintain a clean and hygienic environment for yourself and your fellow dancers, reducing the risk of slips and skin irritation.

Comfortable Clothes:

Remember that pole dancing is a physically demanding activity that requires grip. The reason pole dancers wear so little is to allow their skin to grip the pole. Conventional clothing & activewear will not grip to metal. Choose clothing that allows you to move freely, provides adequate coverage and support, but also facilitates skin-to-pole contact for optimal grip and control. Very short exercise shorts/bike shorts and singlets are perfect outfits for beginners. If the thought of wearing tiny pants intimidates you, you can also buy special grip leggings that will allow you to climb the pole. Just remember that these will grip all the time though and may restrict some of the moves you can do. If in doubt, ask your pole teacher.

Lotion: To Soothe Skin and Improve Grip

Healthy skin grips better than dry skin. Dry scaly skin will cause you to be much more slippery on the pole. Even if you don't have grip issues, with so much skin on show - your skincare should always be a priority.

For many years pole dancers have been told to avoid moisturiser as it can cause you to slip on the pole however this leads to unhealthy dry skin. This is where Pole Physics comes to the rescue! With a residue-free formula, it leaves no slick feeling on your skin. Allowing you to hydrate your skin while still poling. Use after your shower at night or 7-10 hours before poling. You cannot use any other body lotion, balm or body oil when learning pole, unless you consult your teacher first. Standard lotions make poles very slippery and dangerous. Pole Physics has been sold world-wide for 15 years. It is formulated to be pole safe.
