Booking your first pole dancing class is often followed by many mixed feelings. While you’re super excited to try this new and fun form of exercise, you wonder if you’ll get everything right.
Perhaps the Rome-wasn’t-built-in-a-day analogy will help steady your nerves. In a typical beginner class, you’ll find a group of eager students who, much like yourself, are a little bit nervous, but with an unquenchable thirst for learning.
And we think you should focus on learning and having fun instead.
For the best experience as you begin your pole dancing journey, remember these helpful tips:
- Don’t compare yourself with others: Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Comparison is a thief of joy.” So, comparing your moves with others will only lower your self-esteem and make you unhappy.
- Invest in a quality skin care routine: When it comes to pole dancing, you want the best grip on the pole, less you fall and hurt yourself.
You'll only get this sturdy grip with a poler’s moisturizer that gives you well moisturized, non-greasy skin. (Bonus Tip: It improves your skin appearance and smells amazing!!) - Stretch regularly: Stretching keeps you fit and helps to prevent back pain and muscle injury.
There’s a lot more to pole dancing than meets the eye and you won’t learn everything in one sitting.
So don’t shy away from your first class. Take the plunge and see how good it turns out!
But ensure you have these 5 key essentials for a smooth first-time pole dancing experience.

1 - A Stretchy, Well-Fitting Outfit for Maximum Comfort
There's nothing worse than being a beginner and uncomfortable, right?
Well, choose longer pants! You know, ones that cover the back of your knees? They offer much more protection. :)
You won’t go wrong with stretchy, comfy leggings… extremely well-fitting and won’t move an inch when practicing your new moves.
But for more skin-to-skin contact with the pole, stretchy shorts and a supportive crop top are your best bet.
Bare skin gives a better grip and lets you master spins faster. No wonder expert polers are always practicing in their tiny shorts and sports bras. They snugly fit their bodies, preventing the fabric from tangling on the pole as they spin.
And when it comes to footwear, wear comfy rubber shoes or… go BAREFOOT.
Don’t be intimidated by the experts swaying their hips beautifully on the pole. You’re still new to pole tricks, and your rubber shoes or bare feet will ground you as you learn the basics.
Rock these other great pole outfit alternatives if you don’t have the ones we’ve mentioned above at the moment:
- Sports bra: Super supportive with good coverage for maximum comfort
- Tank top: Slim-fit to move with you, not oversized to get in the way as you spin
- One-piece bodysuit: Keeps you decent and conceal your belly
- Legwarmers: Double up as knee protection
Do NOT wear these outfits to your pole dancing for beginners class:
- Loose shorts and tops: Will get in the way as you practice
- Dress: Can be too tight and restrict your movement, or too loose and stick to the pole
- Jewelry: Will scratch the pole or get tangled on the pole as you spin, causing injuries
- High heels: Are challenging to coordinate and can cause serious injuries when you slip
Choosing the right outfit can do wonders for your first pole dancing session. Remember, you don’t need super fancy gear—just a comfy, well-fitting exercise outfit.
2 - A Water Bottle to Keep You Hydrated
All that spinning and sweating will leave you dehydrated.
So bring a reusable water bottle and a small amount of glucose for added energy to your pole dancing class.
If you don’t like plain water, a simple banana or an apple is ideal for a quick flavor boost.
Alternatively, carry sports and energy (electrolytes) drinks like coconut water and fruit juices to your pole dancing for beginners class.
They have key minerals like sodium and potassium that aid muscle contraction and hydration.
Expert Tip: Protein shakes are excellent for you as a newbie poler. Especially milk-based ones, which promote recovery and help reduce the effects of exercise-induced muscle damage. If you’re lactose intolerant, opt for plant-based shakes for similar benefits.
3 - A Grip Aid for a Better Grip
Too much sweating on your hands is a major detriment when the pole is involved. If you find your palms sweating a lot even after drying them with a towel, have a grip aid for additional support.
But don’t rely on a grip aid. Only use it when necessary.
Instead, maintain a good skin care routine by exfoliating and then moisturizing with a residue-free lotion; which soothes and tones your skin.
As time goes, your skin will have a better pole grip, eventually eliminating the need for grip aids!
4 - A Towel to Wipe Away Sweat and Stay Dry
Most newbie polers admit that they didn’t know that people sweat so much until they entered their first pole dancing class.
We explain to them that pole dancing is a strenuous full-body workout that leaves the hands, legs, and arms sweaty, oftentimes making gripping the pole difficult.
This can cause you to slide or slip while on the pole and hurt yourself.
A hand towel comes in handy on such occasions. It cools you down and helps you stay dry.
Most pole dancing studios provide a towel to clean the pole, but it’s also crucial to bring your own to wipe the sweat away from your body.
5 - A Moisturizer Specifically Made for Polers
If you want to enjoy your pole dancing for beginners classes, then wholesomely invest in your skin. The better care you give your skin, the better grip you’ll have on the pole.
The first step to an effective poler’s skin care routine is to exfoliate, then moisturize with a no-residue lotion. Don’t forget this!
Working on the pole with dry, unmoisturized skin is a disaster waiting to occur. You'll easily miss your pole’s grip, fall, and badly hurt yourself. And after several classes, you’ll end up with the typical poler’s “plumber hands,” which admittedly, don't look good.
Luckily, we have a better, safer, and healthier solution: A poler’s moisturizer.
Pole Physics, an all-natural lotion, is the world’s only non-slick, no-slip lotion specifically designed for polers to improve their grip and skin’s appearance.
"...Perfect for every pole dancer! It keeps your skin moisturized while still being able to grip on a pole..."
— Elisa Nguyen, Sensitiv+e Verified Buyer
Pole Physics lotions are not your typical moisturizing lotions. They’re made from all-natural ingredients, don’t leave any greasy residue, and are ideal for all skin types.
Compared to regular lotions, Pole Physics’ are the clear winner… the crème de la crème of all lotions.
See the differences in the table below:
Pole Physics Lotions | Regular Lotions |

Other Extras to Bring to Your First Pole Dancing Class
- Deodorant for those sweaty moments
- Protein bar, a smoothie, or another healthy snack
- Bruise cream when the pole leaves marks called pole kisses
- Wrist wrap for extra protection if you fall
- Period pants for full coverage if it’s that time of the month
- Arm warmer to prevent pole burns and bruises
- Phone to capture those instagram-worthy shots
What to Avoid or Leave Behind
- Jewelry of any kind
- Hand cream
- Regular body lotion
- Baby oil
- Nail extensions
Jewelry, watches, and nail extensions will get in your way or damage the pole itself through scratches—this directly affects your grip on the pole.
Body oils and creams leave an oily residue on your skin that makes it slippery, preventing your body from sticking to the pole.
